Blogger Issues
I'm having trouble publishing to Blogger from Firefox (001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused)... then out of curiousity I tried from IE and everything went fine and even the articles I had tried to publish through Firefox appeared. So I thought maybe the issue was resolved. But I tried again to publish from Firefox to no avail. Now I am trying this through IE as a test... if you see this, something odd is going on!

Just so you do't have to trawl through the comments, here is an update:
Blogger came back to me to say the issue should be resolved, that it was an issue with my host blocking their server requests. And that it occurred due to a change on my hosts side of things. They had no idea why switching browsers sometimes seemed to help.
I am having the same issue with BifSniff now, it's on a different host to this site so it could be the same issue - that a change was made at the hosts end of things. However why does switching browser seem to work for me? It doesn't work for others as you can see if you read all the comments....
I'll post any updates here.

Those of you still finding this article through Google, if this describes the problem you are having, contact your host and check if they have made changes that could have blocked Bloggers server requests.
Please postabout your experience with this issue, there is a lot of traffic to this post and I am not sure whether the issue is resolved for visitors who find it or not!

Three new comments today on this issue... still no solid resolution forthcoming... haven't had the problem myself in a while but judging from the traffic to this page it's ongoing!

Have sent Blogger support a request for help on this issue again, to see what the current thinking is...

Well, Blogger have not come back to me on the last mail I sent them on the 20th of December, but it is Christmas, so let's see if anything comes back in the New Year.

"Try plugging in your FTP server's IP address into your settings. Let me know if this resolves the problem."
Anyone currently having this issue please try this and let us know here if it resolves the issue.

Had this issue AGAIN yesterday. I went to try Steves resolution above but didn't have the IP address... so I contacted my host company and they got it back to me today... but BEFORE I tried it I tried publishing again - and it published fine. So this is some intermittent problem NOT dependant on any of my settings etc... this is a BLOGGER issue...

Well, I got back in touch with Steve and he assured me that Blogger engineers were looking into the problem and that they realised now it was an issue at the Blogger end of things. Let's see if they can track it down...

Had this issue again and had over 300 hits on this page, so I guess a lot of other people had the same problem. None of the 'solutions' compiled here worked for me either. I emailed Blogger again... not going to hold my breath on a meaningful response though seeing as Steve never got back to me since my last update (10 months ago)and a search on Blogger help on this issue turns up nothing.

Couldn't post to my blogs. Emailed Blogger AGAIN... no answer from the last email.
I sent them the error, the fact I couldn't post to my blogs and neither could others I know of - what happened? Let's see if I get a reply this time.

- Clear your cache, history and cookies and try to publish.
- Try publishing through a different browser.
- Read this and this
- Under Blogger -> Settings -> Publishing, change the FTP Server name so it begins with "ftp."
- Delete your username and password in the publishing settings in Blogger and it will instead prompt you for this information when you publish. Now you enter your username and password every time you publish.
Hope this helps until Blogger come back with definitive answer!

Hmmm... good point, I don't think I heard back from Blogger on that one... and they usually come back very quickly..
I'll re-check on that and post anything that comes back!
I have had some emails on this as well as the comments above.
Just to clarify, I was using Firefox when the issue arose. I switched to IE and managed to post - not only that but items I had tried to publish with Firefox then appeared (as though they had been queued and publishing a new item through IE pushed them through.)
Shortly thereafter the problem in Firefox just went away.
I think it was Tom R had a similar issue which may have been cookies related but as I didn't clear cookies in Firefox and it then started working I'm not sure if that was the case for me.
I sent a mail to Blogger about it but got nothing back yet which is unusual for them. I will try to contact them again. In the meantime I would appreciate if anyone who reads this would post what browser they use and if they can try an alternative browser and document any results.... Maybe we can get to the bottom of it, or at least give more info to Blogger to try and get it sorted.

Who all uses godaddy.com to host the site?

I think it is godaddy's problem. I was uploading on Friday night and in the middle of my third or fourth upload my ftp transfer was denied. Then I tried three other blogs I run and they were all refused.
I even tried different systems, like OS-9 and OS X and Windows XP, but no cigar. It the past this worked. I also tried ie and safari, but this did not work either.
I suggest we all contact godaddy and raise hell. We should really bombard both blogger and godaddy to look into this.

9/8/04. Same here, from a Mac user who hosts on GoDaddy as well. Yesterday and Today, both Safari and IE. Any clue as to what the conflict is?
Same problem here - Firefox, GoDaddy - hell, IE doesn't work for me either. GoDaddy escalated my service request and today I got this e-mail message:
"Thank you for your patience. We are unable to locate an attempt made from Blogger.com's published IP addresses to connect to your hosting account. It is possible this is a network issue or an error with Blogger.com. We appreciate your understanding in this matter."
This kindasorta makes sense, as I've had no FTP issues when I manually log in to my hosting account. Something's rotten with Blogger ... and I hope they fix it soon.
I don't use GoDaddy either, so it's unlikely to be at their end... unless it's, for example, a common technical setting/issue with hosting providers.
I sent another email to Blogger and I got an automated response followed by a request for the url of the blog I was having trouble with. Which was a bit odd as I sent this thread to them in the mail... anyhoo I guess that means it's being investigated.
So I guess we'll just have to wait and see and just make sure not to let it go dead. Intermittent bugs are always going to be a pain in the ass to track down, so I wonder if they'll be able to even reproduce it...

I guess the downfall to posting manually via ftp is that you do not get listed as updating? Which will not get you hits?
I hate this issue. I have it hosted on blogspot, not FTPed anywhere. I've tried ie, safari, firefox, mozilla on mac and pc and no dice. I can't publish anything. 10/8/04
Folks--I think it's GoDaddy after all.
You may want to check if your host uses active ftp. Unfortunately, the new
version of Blogger no longer supports active ftp (due to a new, more
scalable network design); passive ftp and sftp are supported however, so
my suggestion would be to consult with your hosting provider about
enabling either of those ftp versions. Sftp is preferable, as it is
encrypted.

This is not necessarily the case with Godaddy. Blogger has not supported passive ftp for a while, over six months at least. I had one of my blogs for over a year and a half.
there is something going on with blogger. check their status section... I think it might be a combination of both godaddy and blogger updating their servers and conflicting. We need to stay on top of this.
Now the error message on all my blogs changed to this:
"001 java.net.UnknownHostException: netartreview.net"
someone is doing something... I wonder if it s blogger?
I talked with GoDaddy and they said they have passive FTP. Said it was Blogger's issue. I don't have this issue with Hostway, BTW.
I am still having problems. I just got a message from godaddy explaining that they are now working together with blogger to fix the problem. Check the word:

Got replies to both my queries on this issue from Blogger today, essentially saying "This
may have been part of a temporary problem that has since been corrected".
So unless anyone else is still experiencing it I guess that's it!

I asked Blogger what the issue actually was and they said my host was blocking their server requests.
I now have the same error on BifSniff which is with a seperate host - I don't know if the issue arises due to changes at Bloggers end or changes at host end...

Blogger came back very quickly to say the error was a result of changes made by my host.
They akso said they did not know why changing browser seemed to sometimes get around the issue.
Which is all very odd because I got the error again on the BifSniff blog using Firefox, and again when I switched to IE it seemed to work fine...???
I'm having the same problem right now, and it 100% HAS to be a blogger issue no matter how much they claim it isn't. I have nothing to do with Godaddy. My domain is through 1and1.com, and as far as server changes from the host go, I am 100% sure there haven't been any since I own the server and do all the work on it. I don't go through a hosting company. So as far as blogger trying to pass the buck to someone else. No dice, it is 100% on their end
hi there - i had this problem across two dozen blogs hosted with a few different ISPs and my solution seems to work for all of my situations.
Under Blogger -> Settings -> Publishing
change the FTP Server name so it begins with "ftp."
i.e., ftp.hostname.com instead of hostname.com
your mileage may vary , but it worked for me at http://hollywood-elsewhere.com and http://rahoi.com

I discovered last night that I was unable to post using Safari or Camino, getting that same 001 java.net error, but just tried IE for Mac and it worked. My host is laughingsquid, which has made no system changes that I am aware of, and I have been able to ftp into my web directory on own with no trouble. Damned peculiar.
I talked to GoDaddy on 10/14 and they told me that I have to use passive FTP instead of active FTP. Just delete your username and password in the publishing settings in Blogger and it will instead prompt you for this information when you publish. Now I have to enter my username and password every time I publish, but at least it works now!

I know this is an old post but I found it off Google. I'm still having trouble posting to my blog. I'm with surpasshosting.com and have been now for almost two years. I use Firefox but when I tried posting with IE it didn't work either. This is really annoying. Any updates?

I was having this problem using NetCaptor which uses an IE engine. I switched to straight IE and it worked fine.
Have been publishing for a couple of weeks and never a problem before.

I just started to have this problem described above when I changed webhosts. (I am registered with godaddy and my host is 1and1. My old host is brinkster.)
I once couldn't get my atom.xml (which validated) to be recognized by feedburner as a valid feed after changing hosts because the new DNS entries needed to propogate and feedburner admitted they were caching the DNS entries longer than they needed to.
Is this the same type of situation?

I have now plugged in my IP address, but it could be months before I really know if it worked because the issue is so intermittent...

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain... tha last thing I was told by Blogger support was that it was a known issue and would be sorted... but I still don't see it on the known issues page...
Anyway, I have a few friends who swear by WordPress if you are looking for an alternative. I'm told you need to know you're way around computers a bit more than with Blogger... it's a bit more techie.
But it's got great functionality and some wonderful plugins are available...

The problem persists and is apparently and indeed related to FTP for non-blogspot blogs, based on six Blogger.com blogs I have created.
All FTP postings to non-blogpot websites (in my case, all handled by ixWebhosting.com) receive (as of Thursday evening, December 1, 2005) the same error messages:
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out[DOMAIN...archive.html ]
I have contacted the host, ixWebhosting. They tested FTP connections, which are nearly instantaneous. I second that: from my iMac G5 using Fetch software, I am able to FTP from my computer. That leaves Blogger.com as the source of the problem.
Furthermore, ixWebhosting advises that timeouts with their host occur within 60-180 seconds: Blogger.com takes far longer to generates its error message (I would guess 5-10 minutes -- so long that I have never stuck around on a posting page to find out).
Ladies and Gentlmen of Google / Blogger.com, please respond ASAP with an update.

I assume the problem lies with Blogger.com, since you overwrite or rewrite archives with each post's publishing. Perhaps the problem is FTP related (on your side)? -- I don't know.
All I do know is that I have been unable to publish for 18 hours, that I publish daily and am now overdue, that I get these error messages -- and that I want you to investigate and fix this problem ASAP.

it's really starting to look like blogger is dead in the water isn't it?
Maybe they will prove me wrong, but sending emails to blogger support is like shouting into a black hole...
God knows how many emails I've sent them.
You can almost see the tumbleweed...
Twelve days later and it still isn't working for me.
A friend who's FTP path begins with "www" works fine to her site. But mine begins with "/name.com/"
I think that might be the problem.
I'm on ixwebhosting.
Same issue here. I tried changing my login to see if it was connecting- sure enough, if I put a fake login I get an error message right away. But if I put in the real login it stalls while transferring files. No response from blogger on this.
PS- I've also been having these problems since Dec 1. It's the 17th today and this is getting frustrating- as Phil says I'd rather pay for reliability than face these type of issues.
Seriously... start looking into wordpress guys. I really think Blogger is dying if not dead.
I'd be interested in an alternative (in fact I'd pay for one!) but don't have the time to invest in converting everything over.

I had to abandon Blogger for the same problem. Impossible to get real answer from them about it. They simply do not know.
I have done several of the "fixes" mentioned in the comments and post. No good. Just sits at 0%
I have ixwebhosting but i think it has to do with BLogger.
This problem is still happening. Since it goes back to 2004 and even further, I don't expect Blogger to do anything about this. Once I've earned some money to pay for decent hosting and a domain, I'm out of here, on to brighter shores (Wordpress).

My site is hosted entirely on blogger (no ftp or anything like that). I have been getting the connect error for the past couple of days.

The page that it errs on is sometimes different. Sometimes it will be a particular article and sometimes it will be an archive page.

Republishing an entire blog will sometimes get stuck part way through and not finish, though new entries can still be published normally. We are working on improving the database performance to fix this error.
On the status page, it appears as if they have been having frequent outages as of late.
Been happening to me now for a week :( I have contacted Blogger but have not heard back .....
I was able to finally fix this by changing my archive settings. I had changed users for posting. Re-check path for the archive. Also I changed the domain from example.com to ftp.example.com and all issues are resolved!!!
