PHP RSS Parser and Conditional Tags

Well, as previously posted I downloaded Magpie, unzipped the files and then uploaded them to the BifSniff site.
At first I wasn't sure what to do because the Magpie site assumes more knowledge than I have of PHP and so the Install instructions were vague to say the least.
However I finally figured out which files to upload where, and got it working.
In order to use Magpie you then have to write a php script to display RSS feeds. Or you can modify the simple sample scripts that come with it which is what I did. They are very simple to get to grips with.

Magpie includes a debugging script which you can run to see if everything is working ok - the only problem I had was that the debugging script said that it couldn't create the cache - I got onto my hosting providers support team and they sorted that one... I still have to read through the documentation on that to understand what the story was behind that issue and how to avoid it in future.

Anyway, I modified one of the simple scripts and placed it in the Blogger Template to display Biff's Blogrolling list of links.

All worked fine until somebody pointed out to me that going into the Archives broke the RSS feed. It broke it because the link to the Magpie files was relative - I had been thinking in terms of the Index page and hadn't considered the Archive pages which are in subfolders.

I got around this problem using Bloggers Conditional Tags to ensure that the RSS feed only appears on the main Index page.

There is probably (or at least possibly) a way to include a link to the Magpie files which would not be relative to the Index page, but relative to the root - but so far my attempts have failed. More on this later if I resolve it.

PHP RSS Parser implemented on BifSniff

I got the RSS parder working and I am now using it on BifSniff.com to grab Bifs Blogrolling links and display them on the site in the links section.

PHP RSS Parser

Magpie RSS - PHP RSS Parser

Trying to implement and get to know the above so that I can implement RSS feeds on sites... should have it up and running in the next few days but the site doesn't include much absolute beginner instructions!

It would be handy if I could get it running as I could possibly then use it on Seanoneillsongs.com to show some of Journal on his homepage and also to manage links etc on BifSniff.com - and I could set up feeds from those sites on 9mmfilm.com.

jim white

Went to see Jim White in the Crúiscin Lán in Cork on Saturday night… an amazing solo gig, surrounded by pedals and odd little keyboards and microphones he layered up the sound of each song before our very eyes to create his unique sound described by Rolling Stone as a “swampy musical soup of Southern gothic”
I drew this picture while listening to his “Wrong-Eyed Jesus” album, which by the way is still my all time favourite CD cover art.

His website is http://www.jimwhite.net/ but it’s a bit crap. Also crap but marginally better is http://www.luakabop.com/jim_white/

Gummi bears defeat fingerprint sensors | The Register

Gummi bears defeat fingerprint sensors | The Register

Saw on the tv3 last night another crap piece of 'news' about USA insisting on biometric data in passports of people from countries including Ireland by 2006. If I remember correctly from previous articles I've read, this is a security measure aimed at weeding out terrorists somehow...
Another one of those 'solutions' that don't address the problem but encroach further on our privacy... not that the USA is to blame for that, I seem to remember it was proposed for the EU anyway...
Anyway, as far as fingerprint data combined with fingerprint scan (as shown on said news article) this article from the Register is interesting!

Referendum Exit Poll

Morning Ireland mentioned an exit poll taken by RTE which indicated that 36% voted Yes because the country was being "exploited by immigrants" and 27% voted Yes because there were "too many immigrants"

Michael McDowell has seemingly rejected the poll saying that "people might
have been confused" and "mightn't have understood what they were talking about" (does he mean understood what RTE were talking about or what the voters themselves were talking about...?).

Anyway, the excerpt is linked to above.

Bleh

So quotefix didn't do much for me, and where did the link to the bertie
picture disappear to in my last post?
Regardless, I did have to change the details for my blog and now it's up and
running again. Hopefull I will have some entries which are not tests soon!

Berie Ahern

Just testing my newly moved site really, but thought I would share this pic of our beloved leader with you. Host.ie migrated to an improved platform just last night... so I thought I better test if I need to change paths in Blogger...

testing OE Quotefix

Testing a piece of software called href="http://home.in.tum.de/%7Ejain/software/oe-quotefix/%20"> Outlook
Express
Quotefix in order to see if it would allow plain text posting to
Blogger and fix the odd line breaks that occur.
Hopefully it might, though obviously that's not it's primary purpose it does
say something about line breaks in the documentation...
I should probably keep rambling here in order to get a proper idea of how a
longish blog would appear but I think I'm running out of things to say, this
should be long enough.

Wired News: Website Analysis Isn't a Game: "Robert Savage came up with VisitorVille, a website-traffic analysis package that essentially crosses the DNA of SimCity with that of the traditional chart- and graph-centric tools businesses have long been using. "

Interesting, reminds me of that fiction book about the development of a virtual reality based 3d simulation of real time Stock Market information... what the hell was that called...?

Email blogging

Well, using rich text causes font tags to be left in, but sending plain text seems to cause odd line breaks (see below). Tom Raftery suggested that the email client could be responsible and maybe changing from Outlook Express might be worth a try, but I'm too lazy for that. So my current experiment (ie this post) is to use the same font in my mail as on the site (trebuchet ms).
Let's see how that goes!
If anyone has other suggestions please let me know!

posting via email

I discovered that posting via rich text allows you to include links but
because of the html in rich text it displays in the email font. So I edited
the previous post because I didn't like the Arial font in the middle of the
page... cheating I know...
Anyway this is a plain text email so I hope it should work fine.. however
links www.9mmfilm.com may not come through as links... let's see.

I love blogger

So far I have to say I love blogger.com. Previously it took me days to hack together an almost workable solution for www.seanoneillsongs.com using Livejournal and I had to pay for the priviledge! Customising the previous journal was do-able but difficult. Paging or archiving was nigh on impossible to do well without developing fairly complex scripts to manage them if you didn't want to redirect to Livejournal.com. With Blogger it took me about 2 hours to customise and implement not one but two journals for Sean's site.
I then implemented it for www.9mmfilm.com which as you can see below (550 error) was a little trickier but not entirely Bloggers fault!
Plus I am using BlogThis (a button on the Google toolbar allowing you to post to your blog about any site you visit) to highlight sites I like or use (see posts on Annecy and sxc.hu) and on top of all that I am posting this entry via email and I haven't even mentioned image support! Oh and it's free.
Thank you Blogger!

Weird Blogger Behaviour

Well, I guess the email post is weaving it's way here... I still get an error if I try to access through Blogger.com but I can access everything fine if I log in through BlogThis. Which makes no sense at all... to me anyway.

Ironic?

I wrote a post about how great Blogger is and tried to post via email to try out that functionality but there was no sign of it appearing so I tried to log into blogger.com to see if there was any sign of the post there... but when I tried to view my blog I got an error!
Did I break it by trying to post via email?
Just minutes earlier I had posted using BlogThis which is how I'm trying to post this one... let's see if this one appears.

Annecy 2004 - Internet Selection - Vote on line

Annecy 2004 - Internet Selection - Vote on line

97 films from 18 countries were submitted and 21 have been retained for the competition, including irish animations:

Boiled Eggs n'Beer of Mark Cumberton
CrimeScene-Sex Booze and a Sheep Named John of Frank Prendergast and Emmet O'Neill
M. Bird of Trevor Murphy
Toilet Humour of Jason Tammemagi

So please go and vote for CrimeScene!

Citizenship Referendum

I read on the paper today that according to the polls the 'yes' vote seems to have the majority in the upcoming referendum... I was a bit shocked because I had thought a 'no' vote was inevitable due to the transparently weaseling approach of our Government and their ever changing reasons for the referendum. Anyway, I did some looking around on the web and found a huge amount of negative response to the proposed change to the constitution so I am still hoping that despite the polls it will be a 'no' vote.

One of the better articles I read on the subject is by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and is on their site their site here.
They also have other interesting articles and documents on the subject on their site. They are an independent body so there aren't any election based motives for their views...

I don't know what any of your views on the subject are, but I feel pretty strongly that at the very least we need to get to the bottom of why we are really being asked to change our constitution, especially as after reading this, and other articles, I can see no reason to do so.
I felt so strongly that I felt compelled to 'get up and do something'. So I sat down at my computer. What can I say, it's a brave new world.

Blogger 550 error

I should have gone to bed ages ago, but setting up a blog on Blogger.com for 9mmfilm was driving me nuts.
I set two blogs up for Seanoneillsongs.com without a hitch, but when it came to 9mmfilm I kept getting a 550 error (permission denied). I guess I should have gone to bed and dealt with it in the morning because the answer was staring me in the face...

I did a google on it and found it to be a common problem, but for a lot of people it was because they didn't enter the ftp path correctly, which I knew I had.
Then I came accross an article which said when they turned off archiving it worked fine. So I tried that and I discovered that it got me a step further in that files were created on my site, but I then got a 550 error for the atom.xml file.

And this is where my stupidity comes into play... I guessed straight away that the atom.xml file was being put somewhere I didn't have write access to being on a virtual server. But it took me hours to discover that under the Site Feed options you are supposed to enter the full path for creating the file.
I had assumed that Blogger derived all paths from the initial ftp path, but it doesn't.

So then I went through all the settings tabs and entered the paths for the archive and the xml file and bang, everything worked fine.

So goodnight!
